why cesheo?

The Cambodian genocide at the hands of the Khmer Rouge took the lives of up to 2 million people (~20% of the population), including hundreds of thousands of the educated middle-classes deemed enemies of the state. Since the fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979 the country has slowly reestablished ties with the world community. However, the genocide left a legacy of widespread poverty and illiteracy in Cambodia.

Unfortunately, the Cambodian government does not provide free education so the only way many children receive an education is through CESHEO.

CESHEO is a very small, grassroots, and volunteer-based organization. Our long term goal is to become a self-sustainable school, orphanage and refuge for the children of the countryside outside Siem Reap, Cambodia. However, CESHEO is simply not at that stage yet.

The organization relies purely on donations and the time and caring of our volunteers. The organization has minimal overhead in comparison to larger charities. We have no offices or paid executive staff. 94% of your donations go directly to supporting the children (see operating budget below). In addition, because the cost of living in Cambodia is very low compared to Western standards, even small donations go a long way.

CESHEO is an established, yet struggling organization. The Covid-19 pandemic created a massive disruption to the tourism-based economy of the local area (near the ruins of the ancient temples of Angkor Wat) and the fundraising and volunteer model that was supporting CESHEO. We are currently not receiving enough donations to even cover our monthly expenses. With your help, we can easily change that.

CESHEO is a registered NGO in Cambodia. Donations flow through our fiscal sponsor, 143 Collective, an established 501(c)(3) in California. All donations are tax-deductible for US taxpayers.

Where Do Donations Go?

We are a small and humble organization. 94% of your donations go directly to supporting the budget below, with 6% going to required administrative fees to support our fundraising.

The budget below reflects our ideal state of monthly operations. As of this writing, our monthly recurring donations are well below this amount. On the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have struggled from month-to-month to find a way to keep going. With your generous support, we can change that and make sure the children are fully supported. Once these fundraising goals are met, we can consider necessary spending on infrastructure improvements.
